What is a Mattress in a Box?
The concept is simple and utilises compression of the mattress prior to vacuum packing it and placing it in a box, making it very easy to transport, and a great product for those making their first mattress purchase.
Just like all other mattresses, Mattress in a Box models come in a wide range of qualities. The ideal constructions are memory foam mattresses of a medium to low density, and some pocket spring mattresses.
A Mattress in a Box does have some limitations when it comes to the type of mattress that can be compressed — it cannot have edge wire support, as edge wire should not be bent.
A Mattress in a Box does have a shelf life, and ideally it should not remain compressed for more than 6 months from the date of manufacture. Buying from a reputable company with a reasonable turn over usually avoids this issue.
Density refers to the weight per volume of an item, and so medium and low density mattresses have more air in the foam used in their construction. This makes them easier to compress. It also means that their actual life span is somewhat shortened, making the warranty period 5 years as opposed to the 10 year warranty you would receive with a more expensive mattress.
Why purchase one in-store when you can buy online?
At Sleep Space, we aim to demystify the process of purchasing a Mattress in a Box.
If you’ve already had a browse at a few mattress in a box websites, you may have noticed that the vast majority of them offer a trial period (typically 90 days) wherein if the product does not meet your expectations, you receive a full refund and free return. Logic will tell you that when a deal sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Offers of ‘free delivery’ and sleep ‘trial’ periods must be paid for by someone, and that someone will be you, the consumer, without doubt — the price of the mattress is inflated to cover the cost of such offers.
We do not offer a trial period. What we do offer is the chance to try our mattresses in-store before you settle on a decision. So, instead of waiting days for your mattress to arrive, potentially being disappointed by the product you receive and then having to make your way through the refund process and start the hunt for the right mattress all over again, you can simply visit us in person, try the mattress out for yourself and walk away confident with your purchase. As we do not offer a trial period, you will ‘get what you pay for’ without the price being inflated. Of course, if a mattress is faulty, we will replace it.
As the mattress is compressed into a box, and because we carry stock, you are given the option of taking the mattress straight home from our store (all you will need is a suitable space in your vehicle to transport it) or having it delivered and installed by our trusted white glove delivery service — instead of a mattress being left on your doorstep, we will unpack it, install it and take all of the packaging away with us.
